From The Preacherâs Heart
âExpect great things from God, attempt great things for God.â I know sometimes some of you think I am a little too optimistic. You might even think I am a little naive at times. One of my greatest desires is to see Vernon turned upside down for Christ. To see people come to know Jesus and see a town that has in the past been dubbed nub city and made national news by fighting in the town hall become the hot seat for a great revival. Sounds far-fetched donât it? As I go back and read what I just wrote I might even agree it sounds a little naive. Read that opening quote again. That is what gives me hope. That is what lets me know it can be done. As a matter of fact, evangelizing Vernon is exactly what God want to happen! How do I know that? 2 Peter 3:9 says God is not willing for any to perish but that all might come to repentance. You see those two words in there: any and all? That includes Vernon. How do we fit in? We do what Jesus instructs us to do, spread the Good News. Ephesians 5 tells us Christ is the head and we are the body. Have you even seen the body act independently of the head? We have a phrase we use a lot in the south, âhe is running around like a chicken with his head cut off.â The chicken just flops around doing nothing until he runs out of steam. That is what happens when a church body severs itself from the Head. It flops around aimlessly until it runs out of steam. God has given us a job so letâs get to it. Pray for ways to evangelize our community then implement those ways. I have faith in this congregation to attempt great things for God, and I am expecting great things from God!
